Billy Skinner Double Jazz Quartet

Trumpeter/composer Skinner paid his dues with luminaries Jackie McLean, Roy Haynes and Jimmy McGriff. In its only recording, made in 1988, Skinner's Double Jazz Quartet featured legendary Boston drummer Bobby Ward, an unsung master who has performed with Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Cat Anderson, Illinois Jacquet, Bob Mover and many others.

Kosen Rufu (AC-3333)

The DJQ worked regularly through the 1980's, evolving a sound which balanced Skinner's unique horn voicings and Ward's volcanic bursts, a sound lyrical and passionate, melodic and brimming with energy, Skinner's talent was recognized by Jackie McLean, who recorded three Skinner compositions on the 1974 Cosmic Brotherhood, including "Star Dancer," reprised here. The DJQ is not a cookie-cutter neo-bop band; its sound is like no other.
